What is TPO and Why Is It Banned?
TPO is a photoinitiator used to harden gel polish under UV/LED lamps. It plays a crucial role in transforming gel into a durable finish. However, it has been classified as a CMR substance (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, Reprotoxic) due to its potential health risks—including reproductive harm and cancer—prompting its restriction in the EU.
I want to reassure you that no client has ever been at risk. But as a leading manufacturer in our industry, we always comply with the law. Our TPO levels are far below the 5% limit, which is now being reduced to zero.
Meet TPO-L and BIS-TPO: The Safer Photoinitiator
To replace TPO, we’ve reformulated our products with TPO-L (ethyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) and BIS-TPO(BIS-TRIMETHYLBENZOYL PHENYLPHOSPHINE OXIDE), a structurally safer alternative. TPO-L initiates the same curing process but without the same toxicological concerns. Importantly, it is not classified as CMR under EU regulations.
